After obtaining his PhD degree from University of Maryland, College Park in 1989, Qiang Yang has worked as an associate professor at University of Waterloo from 1989 to 1995, and a professor at Simon Fraser University in Canada from 1995 to 2001. At Simon Fraser University, Yang held a prestigious position as an NSERC Industrial Chair from 1995 to 1999. He has published two books and about 100 research articles in conferences and journals. He was the conference chair of the 2001 International Conference on Case-based Reasoning held in Vancouver, Canada in July 2001. He was also a conference co-chair for the 2000 Canadian AI Conference.

Qiang Yang is interested in data mining, planning, case-based reasoning and machine learning, and their application to web, bioinformatics and business intelligence problems. He is a member of AAAI and IEEE Computer Society.
